How to Use the Position Finder on CoachAI

How-to Guide

The Position Finder helps you work out where a player is best suited to play — based on their actual attributes, not just gut feel. It's especially useful for new signings or players you're still getting to know.

Step 1: Understand What the Position Finder Does

Instead of guessing a player's best position, the Position Finder lets you rate them across key attributes. CoachAI's AI then analyses those ratings and recommends the position or positions that suit them best. It's a quick, objective way to make a judgment that's usually based on instinct alone.

Step 2: Navigate to the Finder Tab

Open the Matchday Planner and look for the Finder tab at the top of the screen. Click it to open the Position Finder.

Step 3: Select a Player

You'll see a dropdown or list of players from your squad. Choose the player you want to assess. If they don't appear, check that they've been added to your squad first (see the Squad Editor guide).

Step 4: Understand the FA 4 Corner Model

CoachAI uses the FA 4 Corner model — the same framework used by the Football Association to assess player development. It looks at four areas:

Each corner reflects a different dimension of what makes a well-rounded footballer.

Step 5: Rate Each Attribute

For each area, you'll rate the player on a scale of 1 to 10. Be honest — a 5 is fine, and accurate ratings will give you better recommendations than generous ones. Work through each category until all attributes are filled in.

Step 6: Generate the Recommendation

Once you've completed the ratings, click Get Recommendation (or similar — the button will be visible at the bottom of the ratings section). CoachAI will process the scores and return a result within seconds.

Step 7: Read the Result

The result will show you one or more recommended positions for that player, along with a brief explanation of why those positions suit their profile. For example, a player who scores high on physical and low on technical might be recommended as a centre-back or defensive midfielder rather than an attacking role.

Step 8: Apply the Insight

Use the recommendation to inform your next team selection — or as a starting point for a conversation with the player about their development. You can also revisit the Position Finder a few months later to track how their ratings have changed over time.

Tips and Common Questions

  • Be honest with your ratings. The recommendation is only as good as the data you put in. Don't round up — rate what you actually see on the training pitch.
  • Use it for players you're unsure about. If you've been moving a player around trying to find their best role, the Position Finder can help you make a more informed call.
  • Great for new signings. When someone joins mid-season and you haven't seen much of them yet, a quick assessment can help you place them sensibly from the start.
  • Can I rate the same player twice? Yes — as a player develops, you can run the assessment again to see if their recommended position changes. It's a useful tool for tracking progress over a season.
  • What if the recommendation surprises me? Trust your coaching instincts too. The tool is there to support your decisions, not replace them. If a recommendation doesn't feel right, look at where the ratings are highest and use that to guide your thinking.
